How to not be distracted?
If you take a look at the world today, you would realize that distractions are ever-present. Whether it is the physical distractions from our buzzing gadgets or the psychological distractions from advertising, distractions are all around us, sometimes pulling our attention from things that are important. Things that need doing. How then are we to remain focused and keep our eye on the ball?
Why we may get distracted
Whilst our modern-day distractions can be largely attributed to the advances in technology and mass media, allowing us instant access to the latest news, happenings and social trends, it is not the main reason why we give it our interest. We give these distractions our attention out of fear, our fear of being disconnected. Humans are social beings, and it is in our biology to socialize and interact. Encouraging us to form communities and groups of like-minded individuals. It is through this fear of missing out (FOMO) and the fear of being disconnected from our social groups that we get drawn into these distractions. Spending hours on end on social media, checking up on the latest hype, events and talks amongst our peers.
What we should do if you feel this way
If you happen to find yourself distracted, congratulations, you are self-conscious of your distractions. Many of us, go through our days without being aware of the subconscious works at play, the nudges on our thoughts and the sway on our perceptions. To be self-aware of what is going on in your surroundings and the things that influence you is half the battle won. Take a few moments to reflect on the distractions that are interfering with your life and your goals.
Fill the rocks and the sand would follow
What’s next is to focus your thoughts and energies on things that are important- things like your faith, your family, your friends, and your future. Don’t allow the day’s interruptions to derail your most important work. Prioritize your day with the most important tasks first. Just as Hebrew 12:1 says, “Let us throw everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” Focusing on our bedrock, our foundation that anchors our inner self.
Divide and conquer
Asides from knowing what you want to achieve, you need to know how are you going to get there. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.”. Knowing what you want to prioritize is good but having a plan of action is better. Therefore, create a plan for yourself on the things you want to achieve and the things above. Create tasks and follow them up with actions to match the conviction. Don’t just dream about it, put in the work too.
In the end, it is up to us to choose what is important and the actions we will take on our current path. Take a few moments to reflect on what priorities you would like to focus on and the distractions that are hindering your goals. We can continue to ponder on our dreams or make them a reality.
